Lanuza’s climate is characterized by rainfall that is distributed throughout the year. The period from April to August has the lowest level of rainfall while heavier rains occur from November to February and has 7% exposure to tropical cyclone.
Where to go:Located on the southern edge of the Northwestern Pacific typhoon belt, the waves driven by the winds of the typhoons are unpredictable. If a strong typhoon passes close enough, surf can reach almost 15 feet, with 9, 11 or 14 waves per set and up to twice as many waves per hour. The Surf Report Magazine describes Lanuza as a place with a flawless river mouth. Its waves spin long perfect rights on a big swell at low tide. There is a hollow tube section at take-off and there are long section walls up to 200 meters.
This rural but elegant little town which faces the Pacific Ocean, has endless waves ideal for surfing and other water sports activities. A site known as Doot Poktoy, is a huge sand bar across the town’s sea wall with waves that can go up to 10 feet comparable with Cloud 9 in Siargao.
Doot Poktoy is endowed with some of the best waves in the world. And when the waves are good, they can measure up to the world renowned waves of Siargao and Hawaii.
Moreover, Lanuza Surfing Paradise offers privacy in abundance, leaped gently by soaring blue waters which allow you to experience nature: the perfect hideaway to enjoy the waves, the sand, and the scenery.
Surfing competition are scheduled between the months of November and December. Five national and three international surfing festivals were already conducted including the just concluded 6th Lanuza Surfing Festival 2008 participated with surfers from La Union, Baler, Siargao, Lanuza, Samar, Davao, Zambales, Surigao, Catanduanes, Tandag, Israel, Japan and Australia.
The next international competition will be on November 2009, with expected participants coming from Hawaii, Australia, Indonesia, France, USA, and Japan.
The town of Lanuza is not only blest with best waves but also abounds with tourist spots. Among them are Magkawas Falls and Green Paradise, Campamento Caves, Bunga River and Mangrove Forests, Lanuza Marine Park and Sanctuary, Prospero B. Pichay, Sr. Boulevard, Lanuza Agsamcraft, and the Centennial Ancestral House.

Once been part of the history of Lanuza, Campamento cave served as a garrison of the Japanese soldiers in the height of Japanese regime. A naturally preserved structure that Lanuzanhons were very proud of. The magnificent formation of stalactites and stalagmites that glow in the dark and shine when hit by light. Still a sanctuary of a large group of animals and insects like bats, snakes and giant spiders that nested inside the cave. A blended embrace of cold and warm air passing through the opening of the cave that allows you to imagine the mirror of the past.

MAGKONO

When i was a small child, I once saw a farmer trying to cut down a dead Magkono tree and watched as his ax blade bounced off the wood's iron hardness, sparks flying off as if the metal was striking metal. That was when first learned of this species of Philippine hardwood that grows only in certain parts of the country, among them the province of Surigao Del Sur. Lianga, as a logging town, was a major supplier of this rather rare, dark-colored & highly prized wood often made into furniture and decorative pieces.
Nowadays, the cutting down of this tree species is banned by law but a steady yet diminished supply is available from both legal and illegal sources.
